VMware Cold convert P to V

I have an XP machine that died but need to convert the disk,(which is good) to a VM.

I know I have done this before but its been awhile.. I thought the disk could be mounted on another Windows PC,(say via USB) and then converted using "VMware Converter Standalone".

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

VMware Converter converts a Live PC, not an image.

You would need to provide an image to VMware Converter using Symantec Recovery.

Is there a free recovery tool besides Symantec also what about converting the disk to a VHD will that work?

You can use the free trial available from Symantec to complete this.

It's the only one available.

The only other method, is to use Ghost or other imaging product, and follow the older Ultimate P2V method see here

this is how we did P2V before VMware Converter...
Have you tried hanging the disk off of a working machine and then converting just that disk with Converter?
