I am looking to learn how to script and was wanting to know what is a good starting point for a sys admin looking for automation and management of the Operating system?

another useful site is :

a browser search for windows scripting will find you a bunch more
If you want to learn for Linux you can learn Bash.  For Unix, you can do Korn shell.

Yes but should I start with scripting or learning something like C++ or Java?

if all you are interested in is automation and management of the operating system scripting is generally the way to go, although it is possible to write management programs in programming languages scripting is generally quicker more reliable and better documented.
