symantec liveupdate java install error

SEP 11 is installed on a SBS 2003 server.  Liveupdate was not able to contact the definitions server and I followed the steps in this KB, up to step 6:

I uninstalled liveupdate and am unable to reinstall it as it says that JRE 1.5 is required to complete the install.

Can I install the latest version of Java, or are the 1.5 libraries not in that version?  What is your recommendation?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

yes, I can install the latest version and whatever it needs from 1.5 will be there, or
