netbackup restore question

we are using netabckup as our backup solution. If we start restore, it will mount the tape drive and will restore. If I start net backup and wanted to use same tape drive,  what will happen?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Ifa job is running and using the tape, your backup job will either fail or go to a wait state and start running once restore is finished and correct tape is mounted.  This all depends on the backup window you created for the backup job.

Thank you very much. Basically, it will wait until that task is completed on the tape, and then new job will start. Am I right?

The answer is:  IT DEPENDS

If you are using a single tape drive for backups, then the backup will wait until a tape is loaded that it could write to and this has to happen before the backup window closes or else it fails.

If you are using an auto-loader and there are tapes that the backup policy can write to then as soon as the restore is finished, a tape that the policy can write to is automatically loaded and backups will start and again all this has to happen before the backup window closes.

Thank you very much. My question, can we do multiple read from the host? for an example if we are restoring file  xx, from tape drive  yy , and can we open a another request restore zz from tape yy in same time?

NetBackup allows only one job to control the tape.  Restore jobs will run in serial mode and not parallel mode.
