golden images of workstations of servers

If you have a standard "gold" build for say windows 7 laptops, or windows 2008 file servers, when it comes to needing to buy new laptops, or provision a new windows 2008 file server, what tools do oyu use to ensure they are identical to the gold build? Is it common to have a gold build for all devices of the same role? What format is this "gold" build in?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

i take it you mean reference image when you say Gold build.  there are no hard and fast rules but a reference image should be kept as standard as much as possibility allows.
