vmware converter error

I am having issues doing a conversion using vmware converter 5.1, I get the error message:

A general system error occured:  unknown internal error

Try it again, it often occurs.

also reboot the server.

I hate that error... so GENERAL! :P  That error could mean MANY things. You could have a DNS issue (so, try using IP of everything, from the source machine you're converting to the Host and/or vCenter you're converting the machine to [i.e. target]). I've also seen that to be a firewall issue on the source machine, so check that as well. Here is a KB that may be able to further assist as well....

This error may be caused slow disk IO accessing your system.

Run chkdsk /f/r on ALL of your volumes of the system you are trying to convert also run a defrag, all prior to conversion.

If all fails consider creating VM and simply restore. I recommend Acronis products as far cleaner solution of the converter is not working.
