raid 5

just purchased poweredge 2950 III with 6 hard drive. Can anyone show me how to do raid 5 step by step? I am just a developer not network guy.

If your goal is performance, then the last thing you want to do is RAID5.  Do a 6-drive RAID10 instead and it will average minimum of twice as fast (more likely 3X faster), but total usable data is 3X capacity of the disk drive.

Conversely, if your goal is data protection, AND your controller can do RAID6, then do that.  Capacity will be 4X a single disk drive, but this has twice the redundancy.   Performance will be  maybe 10% worse than the RAID5.

Remember RAID5 does NOT always protect against data loss in event of a single disk failure.  It only protects against data loss when there is a single failure and NO bad blocks on the remaining drives.  RAID6 has twice the redundancy, so it can protect against data loss in event of both a single drive failure and bad blocks  (or even 2 HDD failures and no bad blocks on remaining drives).

Read the manual for your controller and see if it lets you do RAID6.
