Mobile Device Management

We're currently looking into MDM solutions for managing Windows Phone, iOS devices and Android devices.

We've already spoken to many vendors of MDM tools, so we have a pretty good idea of what's on the market. Also got some demos. But demos can be misleading.

So when we ask the vendors for a reference visit to an actual implementation, we can hear the crickets chirp. Seems many companies doing a POC or small scale tests, not many having a large installed base.

So I'm asking the question here:
(1)who has done an MDM implementation with a fairly sized installed base?
(2)What MDM tool did you select ?
(3)what type of mobile devices do you support?
(4)what are your general experiences with the tool?
(5)Did you experience any differences between what was promised and what is actually possible?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

(3)what type of mobile devices do you support?
Citrix Enroll has the ability to manage Andriods.
We don't support androids in our environment but have the ability to.

(4)what are your general experiences with the tool?
Works very well and easy to manage, via a web UI

(5)Did you experience any differences between what was promised and what is actually possible?
So far, everything that was promised was as described.  Licenses are fairly inexpensive as well. $20/client

We work with Novell ZENworks Mobile Device Management (as a Novell partner) to setup and manage personal and company-owned iOS, Android and Windows devices.  I personally have not done an implementation yet but have a number of clients looking at the  Novell MDM solution.

We also work with the Sophos MDM solution and are looking forward to seeing its management merge with the Sophos UTM management console where we're managing firewalls, end point, anti-virus and soon MDM.

Both of the products mentioned are managed with web interfaces and are very easy to navigate.

You many have already looked at both or perhaps neither.  In both cases, I make or can make LDAP connections to AD or eDirectory for my user identities.  Let me know if you have interests in either and perhaps I can arrange the visit(s) you're looking for.

We manage about 500 ios and Android devices with the free Centrify MDM offering. Meraki also has a free MDM offering that looks pretty good. We use Centrify to push out Wi-Fi profiles and to set security settings as well as remote wipe. Meraki has a nice GPS tracking feature.

The major issue is that there are no OS hooks to do really interesting things with the device, like content filtering and controlling the installed apps.

One thing I might add about the Novell ZENworks MDM is that I have the ability to create my own "store" of allowed apps instead of users going to the vendor-based "stores" for whatever apps they want.
