Wordpress - Custom Database

We want to build a Wordpress site but we want to include a custom database (MySQL). I recognize that Wordpress itself is built on a MySQL database, but we have this need:

Content:
- We need to manage ~1650 custom landing pages for each location a patient may visit. (list attached).
- These pages will have address, phone and map on each page
- These pages will also have 3-4 content sections
- The CMS needs to allow us the ability to manage the content on these pages via mass import/ export
- Fields needing to be managed include: title, meta descript, h1's, address, and 3-4 content sections.

Can I add a custom database to manage the above & somehow interface with the database via Wordpress?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes.  WordPress is just regular PHP and MySQL with a lot of custom functions that makes it all work.  If you want to add additional tables to the WordPress installation, you can and then you will need to add extra programming to integrate things.  But this isn't rocket science...just work.

If I add the extra tables, does Wordpress offer a facility to work with them or is it all just custom php code?

Like they all seem to like to talk about "plugins"; is there a "plugin" that let's you manage this?

Thanks

Yes, there are classes functions that allow you to prepare and execute MySQL queries.  You will want to start researching the wpdb class:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Class_Reference/wpdb

as that will be the primary driver here.

Manage what, specifically?  There are plugins that can create custom landing pages, plugins to allow batch editing, plugins to help with SEO, plugins that can create posts or pages via CSV import, etc. etc.  The WordPress ecosystem is huge and you can usually find something to help out.

If you mean "a plugin to manage my completely-custom-external-to-wordpress tables", then likely not.  There are plugins to handle Business Directories (what you are describing) or you could even deploy WordPress in multi-site mode and make each location a sub-site complete with its own theme and users and content but still controlled by the superadmin account at the top level.

You could accomplish much of what you want simply by using categories and posts or a custom post type and custom fields.

There's lots of different options and ways to go here...
