Breaking up a software

I have customized Java based application that loads the files into File server and retrieves the data using a browser as front end. we are planning to break this application into 2 ( loading component and Retrieving component) , so that they do not impact each other if we have to make some modifications in one of them. Can somebody tell me how much effort it would be and if  there is any other way to decouple this app?

Thanks in advance.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

How do you imagine we would have any idea? No code, no example, no nothing.

What  you are trying to achieve now , is how your app should have been built. All apps today employ this strategy , and this is called MVC . You wuld have to research yourself abt  MVC first ,and see how you can redesign your app.

It depends on how the original application was written, how it is customized, how it stores its configuration, etc.

The fast try could be to copy the sources as another project (start as identical), and try to remove all the functionality that is not needed for that specific functionality. Then you can do that with the other copy and with the other functionality. This way you get two separate projects that will partly overlap. You will see what parts are overlapped.

First, learn a decent Version Control System. I prefer git (http://git-scm.com/).
