To upgrade luns/datatsore[from 3.46] while doing upgrade form Esxi 4.1 to 5.1

Hi,

We have cluster having 8 host under it running with esxi 4.1, and each host attached with approx 200+datastore/luns

my concern is while we do upgrade form Esxi 4.1 to Esxi 5.1 (will do one by one for each host in cluster)

will there be any impact for the luns attached to each of my hosts ?

what are the best practice/recommendation/concern we have to check before upgrading host ?

will vmfs also upgrade during host upgrade ?

if yes..how those luns will be visible for other hosts in same cluster running with 4.1 ?

Please advice best practice to upgrade 4.1 to 5.1 with minimal downtime(we are moving all existing host form vc 4.1 to 5.1 then we will do upgrade one by one)

There will be no impact to the LUNs.

When we complete upgrades, we often remove the network cables or fc cables, so no mistakes can be made installing ESXi to the wrong LUN.

So remove all cables from hosts before upgrade.

Make sure your hosts are on the HCL

Check the VMware HCL (Hardware Compatability Lists) here

http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl

Upgrading to 4.1 can be done, via Update Manager or CDROM

see here

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2032757¿

BUT, you will also have to upgrade your version of vCenter to 5.1, if not already completed.

Thanks  for sharing this.

my Esxi 's  are running at remote side on blade chassis[H Series IBM & Blade is HS22]
so no option to remove cables before upgrade ?

and any how we remove that how it will be available in vc  ?

are you taking about fc cables only ?

do we have any option ,which can be applied form blade console form chassis or form Esxi under Vc?

and i believe hs22 is supported by esxi 5.1 as well

Yes, if you use VMware Update Manager, it's the easiest method of upgrade.

there will be no issues with LUNs.

You have to manully upgrade VMFS-3 to VMFS-5. VMFS-5 is only viewable to ESXi 5.x hosts, so make sure before you do this all Hosts are on ESXi 5.1.
