Amazon kindle ebook file type & directory storing them

What's the extension file type of Amazon ebooks?
Is it .lzw & in which folder of my Windows XP are
they stored?

I've come across ebook that just vanishes, so want
to take a backup.

Nope, all the files are there.

Why bother with the Kindle application on a PC? Just use Calibre to manage/read ebooks and you won't have to worry about Amazon.

Calibre happily opens azw (mobi) files... even the ones with DRM, if they're activated on your computer.

You have a folder under "My documents" called "My Kindle Content".
That is the storage for all Kindle ebooks on your system.

If you want to back them up under a library not under Amazon's control, I suggest Calibre:

go to Kindle/Preferences/General and view/change your content folder.

That should tell you where the files are located currently.

I've found the folder, it's
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Kindle Content\

Is there any other files (say an index file) that I need to backup so that if I were
to restore the files to an old PC (that Amazon has no access), I can read the
ebooks from that PC's Kindle?

Below are some of the files in the above folder :

Btw, in my Win XP's Kindle, I don't have Kindle/Preferences/General
but have the following to change the folder:
