Linux Zip - Validate Success

We have some PHP code that is calling the Linux "zip" command.  Looking for a way to determine if if it was successful or not.  Hoping someone my have some insights as to how this might work. Does it provide a return value?  Any other thoughts?

THANKS!

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

try calling it using the exec function:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.exec.php

Ex:
exec ("zip ...."  , $output , $return_var);
if( $return_var == 0)
{
 //everything OK
}
else
{
  //something went wrong
}

Refer to the "Diagnostics" section of http://linux.die.net/man/1/zip for a meaning/description of error codes.
