"The default gateway is not available" Server 2012

A few servers running Server 2012 Standard edition running on esxi 5.1 continues to lose network connectivity. When I console into the server, I see a red X on the network. I run the "Troubleshoot problems" wizard and receive the message in the screenshot "The default gateway is not available". Using the "Try these repairs as an administrator" resolves the problem as does rebooting, but the problem returns later.

A lot of posts for this problem in Win7 relate to NIC drivers, but this is VM. I uninstalled the VMware tools and that did not solve anything. Adding them back in did not solve it either. I have only seen this problem on a Surface Pro and these servers, so Win8 and Server 2012.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I have seen this kind of behavior once before. If memory serves what worked is to install the VMXNET 2 or 3 adapter in the hardware configuration for the VM and remove whatever is currently listed.

To do this go to VSphere, right click on the VM > edit settings  > click Add > Network adapter, and choose VMXNET 3. Since VMware Tools are already installed (as per your post), Windows will automatically detect and install the hardware for you. Go back to the VM Settings and select the other adapter and click remove.
