It depends if the iPad, iPhone, iPod is jailbroken there are apps that can do it. If not then you will have to use iTunes and just backup the itunes folder that is located in the "music" folder
There is an option in iTunes to backup the iPad/iPhone/iPod and this is a COMPLETE backup of the apps, music, data etc.  This is the best and simplest method of saving all data on the device.  You can run the backup manually or set it to run whenever you connect the iDevice.

Alternatively you can use a program like iExplorer to copy data from your iDevice

I believe what you are looking for is a backup solution.

Regarding e-books, I have found the cross platform software, Calibre, to be a wonderful tool for managing e-books and also getting them on to the appropriate iOS device.  Did I say it was Free?

If I connect an iPad/iPhone/iPod to a new Computer will the device not be deleted?

@ixthus68
Yes I know Calibre. But this will only backup E-Books?
Yes, Calibre is for e-books only
If you connect an iPhone or iPad to a different computer from the one where it was originally setup then you will be given the option to erase it and link it to the new computer but you can opt not to do this.   So you don't need to be afraid to plug an iPad into a new computer ... Just read the dialogs that appear and make sure you do NOT PRESS the erase button.

You did not mention you were trying to backup the iDevice on a different computer from the one where it was setup.

Using the original computer and iTunes is the simplest solution.

If that is not possible you can use a 3rd party application like CopyTrans – http://www.copytrans.net/support/how-to-backup-iphone-apps-without-itunes/
Try ifunbox at http://www.i-funbox.com  backup your idevice. I believe no jailbreak needed. Thanks
I use PhoneView from http://www.ecamm.com.
When i updated to IOS 7 and i connected it to my n.b that had no backups on my iPhone 4s it also told me i have to delete and resync and i cancelled that then authorized my phone and boom nothing was deleted.
I found this too:

Support for iPod, iPhone & iPad

Which product do we have to buy?
http://www.copytrans.net/purchase.php

PS: Can you also edit Siftware to Software (in ID: 39537255) :-) ?
The standard version of CopyTrans can perform the backups.
Dear eoinosullivan

Also E-Books?
It can back up the entire device. See the documentation on the copytrans website. Contact them if you want to be 100% sure.
Thanks to you all!
