SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2
I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 server that needs to be upgraded to SP2 on one of the databases instances.
I can see when running the 2008 R2 SP2 install program that I can select the database instance to update. As I only want to upgrade one of the instances (there are three on there in total), can I do this without any issues as I notice that the 'Shared' components *have* to be updated.

Thanks.
We don't want to disrupt the other instances, so if we can just upgrade the one instance, that would be better for us at the moment.
Is there any issues with upgrading the shared components, e.g. will that disrupt the other instances?

Yes you can select only one instance but better you upgrade all of the three and shared components will update if both version is same.
Also check which instance you need to update because you wanted to select only one instance on which your database reside.
Also MS recommend to perform backup of your system databases and user databases when you upgrade sql server instances.
