1950 dell server & exchange 2003

hi

originally I was going to install my exchange 2003 on my wsus domain member server temporarily but just incase there are issues I do not wish to disturb my wsus even though running via port: 8530.

question 1.  I wish to know if there would be any problems installing exchange 2003 on my dell poweredge 1950 server as exchange 2003 is what I am more familiar with and once I have it up & running with all updates and send/receive email externally successfully.  I then plan at a later date to upgrade to exchange 2010/2012 with this same dell poweredge 1950 ?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1950 that I ran windows 2003 on for a long time no problems at all

Then upgrade to windows 2008 again no problem

this server is at/near end of life
if you need something temporary for 2003 then this server would be fine

i would look at new hardware with windows 2008 r2/exchange 2010; you can't go directly from exchange 2003 to 2013

hi seth2740, yes this dell 1950 is just as a temporary measure.

you mentioned below:

"i would look at new hardware with windows 2008 r2/exchange 2010; you can't go directly from exchange 2003 to 2013"

question 1.  surely I could migrate a dell poweredge 1950 if it was running exchange 2003 to another correct hardware physical server for 2010 & or 2013 ?

question 2.  what do you mean I cant go directly from exchange 2003 to 2013, presumably a migration & not an upgrade is possible ?

1) yes, you can migrate off of exchange 2003 that's on that machine now to a different machine running exchange 2010

2) no, there is no direct migration path from exchange 2003 to 2013; you would need to move to exchange 2010.  exchange 2013 does not support an existing 2003 exchange server; only 2007/2010 can co-exist.  once you move to exchange 2010 and your 2003 server is decommissioned then you can move to 2013.
