Office 365 to remote subsidiary company not on our domain yet but in contact list.

I am on Office 365 and we have a co-company that is not on our domain but I have user email address in contact list but cannot send to him.  NDR shows the following and I can't figure it out.

The message expired.
That means the host tried to send the email but failed to do so in the time allowed. The message wasn't rejected.

If this is a contact, check the default email address is the external domain, not the internal.
