How to search sharepoint list results using REST

I have sharepoint list. I want to have a text box where user types a letter and click on search button which should search the sharepoint 2013 list.

I want to develop this using REST API or JSOM, so that I can deploy the script in content editor web part.

which SharePoint edition?

Using the REST API, you have to build this query (assuming you search inside a text column):
_api/web/lists/getByTitle('YOURLISTTITLE')/items?$filter=substringof(SEARCHVALUE,YourField) eq true

List of filter operations (and limitations on User and Multiselect fields):

Absolutly, I would like to search based on the html text column that I enter. Second thing is I want to search based on alphbets.

For example - I want to list A,B,C,D....Z at the top. When I click on letter 'A' it should go and search the entire list starts with letter 'A' and bring back the results and similary for other alphabets. Please suggest how to do this. I'm new to REST API
