"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Office 2010 (like its predecessors and successors) came in a number of different versions (Home & Student, Home & Business, Small Business, Standard, Professional, Enterprise). It also came in Academic, Retail, OEM & volume licensing types of many of these. You will need a key that matches the version & type which is loaded on the machine.

I have used PriceWatch web site on many occasions to find inexpensive copies of legal software. A search for Office 2010 gave prices ranging from $88 to $491.

There are inexpensive alternatives if you are a student or have an elligible student at your address, check here http://www.software4students.co.uk/t/brands/microsoft-office-2010, you'll see what's on offer as well as alternatives, if you don't like Office 2013 you could just have the components you want from Office 365, or indeed purchase Office 2010 software.

Take a look around for legitimate vendors who are selling to students or in fact OEM versions, thats probably the best route to go if you dont have the funds to purchase retail.
