Mail Rely

We have a third party vendor trying to send email through our Exchange 2003 server.  I've supplied them with the info they needed from the image Vendor Email Tool.  I've added their IP address to the SMTP Virtual Server Properties Relay restrictions Allow list.  When they try to send mail they get this as a error:

Failure sending mail.; Unable to connect to the remote server; A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond x.x.x.x:25

Not sure where to go from here?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You might want to actually test from the outside:

Some also use cloud spam filtering and may lock down their routers or Exchange server to only accept from a block of IP addresses of that service.

I'm able to telnet internally but not externally, we have a consultant that managers our firewall could that be the cause.

It sounds like it may be blocking.  Do you know if your MX record for email points directly to you or goes through a spam filtering service first?

if I do a nslookup with the set q=mx command the query the domain name I come up with our security vendors mx record which does spam filtering and is also a smart host.

I'm imagining your firewall maybe blocking everything but their ip address block into your environment.  That might be the reason they are not able to relay and are being rejected.

I'd probably talk to your vendor and mention that.
