I want a cheap "tool control system" for my toolbox that does something like the below.

7am = take 5 tools out of toolbox
4pm = put 4 tools back into toolbox
= look at toolbox screen to see what
            one TOOL is still out

I am a computer programmer, does anyone know of a cheap open source/etc software that can do the above with some cheap 10 cent RFID tags ?

This is an idea I had several years ago.  It's been implemented in various ways, but one of the more interesting ones is this:

There's also this...
...which may be a place for you to start.  I'm not sure if the SmartBox Software Framework is open source or not, but it's worth looking in to.
