No "Sent" in Gmail

So my son has a Gmail account that is somehow tied to his High School.  For whatever reason, none of the emails that he sends shows up in "Sent".  The reason this is such a big deal is that he's trying to prove that he turned in his homework because he emailed it to his teacher as an attachment.  But nothing shows up as "Sent".

Any Ideas?

I wear a lot of hats...

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I just tried a test gmail message and a copy was stored in my "Sent Mail" folder.

However you are not alone with this problem. Read this ....

if you have gmail in conversation mode then if you get a reply to a sent email  and you delete the reply  - the sent one will also be deleted

check your settings (the cog icon on the top right) click the cog and then click "settings"

turn conversation off

also show the "send and archive" button make sure that is showing

So no, nothing is ever deleted.  He sends an email and immediately goes to "Sent" and nothing is in there.

is he accessing the  email system 'on the web'  (i.e in a browser)  or accessing the email via a email client with POP or IMAP ?  (like outlook or thunderbird?)

maybe check....

check settings and look under "Forwarding POP/IMAP
also look under "Labels" and chekc the sent is ticked in IMAP

He is accessing it using the Chrome browser.

have you tried using another PC?

also have you checked in the Trash folder?

have any of the "sent" emails arrived at the senders address?

Peter HartCommented:
BTW  looking sending homework,
if the sent "homework" was a zip file, the teachers email software server could have deleted it or put it in a spam fodler and it would never get to the recipient

Yes, we did a test and the emails are arriving to the address they were sent.  Was not a zip file.

Maybe it time to switch to a proper email program such as Pegasus (my favourite) or another one on this list.

Just get your POP settings from Gmail and handle all your own folders and storage on your PC. For critical emails, just CC them to yourself, or to another email address .... just to be sure!

Right, we did try another PC and the same thing happened.  Trash was empty.

Another email program would make sense if he had a laptop or something, but he uses computers in my home office, my laptop, my wife's laptop, his Dad's computer when he is there, and multiple computers at school.

nightmare.
it may be a problem with that one account.I would try and create a new account on gmail then test it.  if that didn't work go to another web based email such as Yahoo.com or rocketmail.com

He can't create another account that will work like he needs because it has to be his first initial, last name and then the domain of his school.  It would be interesting to see if his friends Gmail accounts do the same thing.  I can't imagine any reason the school would disable things from showing up in "Sent".

Peter HartCommented:
Oh. I see.
I would try escalating it the the School's IT - or whoever managing the account with Google.

in the meantime, every email he sends he could cc himself or to you,  to get a 'sent' list

I think now you mention its actually gmail for business (see link
http://www.google.com/enterprise/apps/business/products.html)

it doesn't use the person@ gmail.com   domain it uses the companies (in this case the school) domain for the email address,
so I could see maybe the sent email is probably in the sent folder of the domain ..somewhere or as you said may be  disabled.  But this is not vanilla gmail account.
it used to be an option on texting in mobiles not to store sent data,  maybe it is the way the account is set up.

I've requested that this question be deleted for the following reason:

I think the school just has it set up wrong.
