Manually Download and Install the "Microsoft Windows Update Installer"

Somewhere there must exist the Internet Explorer "plug in" or ??? that allows Windows XP Update to run.  We are having issues here with some older machines that cannot update via Windows Update.   They attempt to download and install the current Windows Update code and then fail.

We're looking to manually install the Windows Update for the IE browser so the units can access Windows Update on their own and apply 150+ updates.

Anyone know where we can get this file?  Microsoft Update file would be useful as well.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There was a known issue with XP and Windows Update that I used to fix all the time with the following batch file.  Try to run this as an administrator and see if it fixes your issue.  If not please post the hex error you are getting (0x0000000).

mcsween -- BAT file ran like a charm.  Unfortunately it didn't resolve this issue.  I will however keep it in my bag of tricks for future use.

I used the Microsoft Fixit on a Win SP3 computer when I had to reinstall everything.

SOLVED - Thank you all for your constructive input.  I sincerely appreciate it.

It was a combination of - mcsween's - BAT file, and MS kb links along with NRhode - technet link and my 30+ years experience that solved this.

Note: MS Fix-It is worthless in this specific instance.

1)  We started with a Dell XP w/SP3 CD_ROM fresh install.  Windows Update fails with Hex Error  0x8024D001.

2)  Next we downloaded and installed XP SP3 standalone from MS; without uninstalling the  SP3 that the Dell CD had installed.  Reboot.

3)  Then we downloaded and installed IE v8 standalone install.  Reboot.

4)  Next we used this link   www.update.microsoft.com   to install / upgrade the Windows Update Agent.  Reboot.

5)  Finally we used   mcsween's -- BAT file (above).  Reboot.

Now Windows Update works as designed.   It's just that simple!
Jeezzzz  Who would have thought?
