MS OS 2003 standard edition in place upgrade in VM

Hi

I have many application servers which are using windows 2003 OS.
Some of these servers are virtual and some physical servers.
Want to know if I can do inplace server OS upgrade for vms without
Making my app support team reinstall their app and components

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you can do it on a physical box, you should be able to do it on a virtual machine.  You just have to follow Microsoft's upgrade path.

What version of 2003 is it?  Standard, datacenter, enterprise?  32-bit or 64-bit?

Here are upgrade paths from...

2003 to 2008

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951041

2003 to 2008 R2

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979563%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

2003 to 2012 is not supported

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134246.aspx

verify your application(s) will function properly on 2008/2008 R2 first or setup a test environment

What OS do you want to upgrade to?

and do you applications support that OS.

I would recommend, new installations of Windows 2008 R2 or better Windows 2012 R2.

look at my previous comment and third link - in-place upgrade from 2003 to 2012 is not supported

you can only go to 2008/2008 r2

I have never been a fan of inplace upgrade and always try to do clean installs.

Yes, it takes longer be can prevent problem with the server / apps later on...
