Deleting old backup period in backup and restore

I just need to confirm deleting old backups from Windows Backup and Restore.

After time Windows' Backups will fill up an external hard drive.  Is it safe to delete all but the newest backup period or will I lose information?  I have never gotten a clear answer in my online searches.

What is best practice?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Each backup update contains whole files (rather than changes to files). If you backup the same files, then you could delete the previous backup files.
