Why Sould I Use a Proxy to Connect to my Internal Hosts when using a URL Name?

In my browser at the office I am not using the Proxy settings,
but if I wan to connect to an internal hosts using its URL Name (Public IP)  I must enter or configure the Proxy settings ..

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This is for security, connecting on the internal address can be done as the server knows this is internal traffic, anyone could reach the public address so it only allows connections from the proxy, this allows employees to connect away from the office but still keeps it out of the public domain
