Photos disappeared after import from SD card to iPad

I was importing pictures from an SD card to my iPad mini (ios7) via the Apple lightning to SD card camera reader as I have done many times before.  I selected Import All and I selected 'Skip Duplicates' when prompted. It went through its import process and after it notified the Import was complete it prompted to delete or keep images. I selected keep.
When I looked on the iPad the photos are nowhere to be seen and when I put the SD card back into the camera they are not showing up either. However, the previous photos are still on the card that were imported previously. Only the photos I have taken today have disappeared. Does anyone know what could have happened and if there is a chance the photos can be retrieved?

There is a chance but you need to make sure you DO NOT take any new photos and remove the SD card from the camera.

If you have an SD card reader for your computer, you can plug it in and look in the subfolders for the images.
If the images are missing then you'll need to look at data recovery software .. there are LOTS to choose from but first you need to check on the PC.

If you need data recovery software then tell us what platform (Windows or OSX) you will be using.

Here is a list of quite a few:

I've had good luck with one called "Pen Drive Recovery".

In the end, I used the cardrecovery software and successfully managed to restore most images that disappeared - there were some images that were corrupted (not sure how). It's still a worry though that this can happen, especially when ipad advised "import finished" but no pics were there.

Most points awarded to eoin as the correct procedure was advised, especially advice not to take any new photos. Thanks to Scott for providing link to various software which allowed me some comparisons.
