in other words, do you give a dedicated server just for ssrs or does it suffice to put it along the main sql instance. does ms give any standard reco on this?

Hi,
It would depend mostly what kind of load you're expected in the peak periods, if you're in an small environment 30 or less users, it really make sense to keep it in the same box ! also it depends on what kind of server (box) you're using!!

The standard or recommended to give it a dedicated resources and server!!

As huslayer mentioned: as long as your server has got sufficient memory/CPU capacity for the additional load of the report server there's no reason to go for a separate server.

Keep in mind that a setup with a separate report server is more difficult to install than an all-in-one box.  If you need user credentials to get passed to the database you'll need to set up Kerberos, for one.

Here's a good read on the different deployment possibilities for your reporting environment: Planning a Deployment Topology
