IE and Chrome pulling old document from our website after new document is uploaded.

I believe this may be an issue with our website but whenever we upload a new document (.pdf), we have to clear our IE and Chrome cache to force the browsers to go out and get the new document.  I would think that there is something that the browsers check on the website to see if the site has changed or not and whether to pull the information locally from cache or from the website.  Our web developer recently left or I would have asked him...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If the server does not indicate otherwise in the headers then the default in most browsers is to cache, and when you go back for the same file, it will use it from cache.  That is an efficiency that can get in the way sometimes.

So what you need to do is put and expiry on files, using the server configuration.  However if this is a public web site, the user's browser setting may still override and cache anyway.  You cannot control how the user chooses to set up their browser.
