vCenter upgrade from 5.x to 5.5

When trying to upgrade vsphere 5.5 from 5.1, the upgrade fails using the Simple Install method. It stops when trying to start services with error Service 'VMware Directory Service' failed to start. Verify you have sufficient permissions to start the system services. I click cancel and it rolls back the install.
I saw the article 'vSphere 5.5 Single Sign-On upgrade rolls back after importing Lookup Service data' and tried the registry tweak with no luck. The cert info for Subject Alternative Name is as follows...

DNS Name=172.16.50.54
DNS Name=vcenter.domain.com
DNS Name=vcenter.domain.com
IP Address=172.16.60.12

Yes, and I tried changing the registry to the fqdn name and it didn't work. It did have the ip in the registry field.

Personally, I would not bother with an upgrade, it's full of errors, and very rarely works.

Consider installing a new version of vCenter Server 5.5 on a new server.

If I did that then we would have to reconfigure view, Zerto , etc to point to the new vcenter server.

I am having the exact same issue as you were, tpitts, for an upgrade from 5.1 to 5.5 I'm trying to complete. Did you get a solution from VMware support? Or did you try the other route of just installing 5.5 on an entirely new server?
