Some links from MS Office don't work

I have an app specific website hosted internally (iis). The site works fine internally and externally.

We have Office 2k13 in this environment. Any Office product (primarily tried with Word and PowerPoint) where we create a link to this internal site, ends up redirecting to an error page. Any link to any external site works fine. If we PDF the Word document and click on the link, it works fine.

Any ideas?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I'm not using/familiar with Office 2013 but it sure seems like the link is attempting to be resolved from outside your environment, e.g. from Office365.  When you convert to PDF the resolving is now taking place inside your environment.  One way to test will be to attempt to open the Office doc in a local copy of Office 2010 and see what happens.

Just an idea.

It's definitely a resolve issue. The same Word doc works from an external site.

Not sure I understand.  The same document functions correctly when opened external to your environment?  I guess I was assuming the only way the hyperlinks would resolve was if they were resolving from within your firewall.  Or are you saying the same Word doc works fine if the hyperlink is referencing an external site?

Correct.

It's something specific to Office.

So just to recap:

1. Internally -> From any program but an Office program the link resolves
2. Internally -> Office does not resolve
3. Externally -> Resolves from any program including Office

I even created an A record that would resolve the site using the local ip. Now, it didn't work prior to making this A record so it's effectively status quo. Furthermore, the path does not have any ports so the firewall would not affect the situation.
