Install just SQL 2012 Studio, not databases instances

How can install SQL 2013 studio, just the Query portion, not the databases instances.  We have SQL 2018 Studio installed and want ti run 2012.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

During the setup, you can select at some point to install only the client tools, and not the database engine.

We have working sql2008 and for some strange reason when installing sql2012, either DB or only tools, kept getting problems.

Any specific consideration for installing sql2012 tools on top sql2008?

note that it is not recommended to install sql server GUI tools on the server itself, or at least you should keep usage of the GUI tools to strict minimum

note that usually installing a "prior" version after a "later" version is often problematic.
but the other way should not give any problems.

anyhow, what are the issues you get exactly?

Ok, thanx.

First, the installation is not for a server, but a Windows 8 Pro 64bit notebook.

The problem we had was that we wanted to install the sql 2012 express, DB and Tools some months back.  And we wanted to install in this same Windows 8 notebook, which had SQL 2008 express install and running.

The problem was that, for some strange reason, it was not successful.  We tried installing only the tools.  Also tried uninstalling sql 2008 complete and installing sql 2012 and again, problems.

Now we want to try install sql 2012 tool again, not the DB/Instance.  Any advice will be appreciated.

We have the error saved somewhere when we last tried to install it, so we going to see if we can post them.  Nevertheless, at this point, for the purpose of this question, what we want to do is to know the steps to install sql2012, the tools only for querying (not the sql2012 instance), on top of a current sql2008 instance.

Give us your recommendation so we can try it.
