"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

ALL your VMX fixes are applied to virtual machines VMX file, and NOT the ESXi 4.1 host. You will need to power off the VM, and either using

1. vi at the console or via ssh
2. WinSCP
3. vSphere Client, Advanced Configuration, and Change Parameters
4. PowerCLI scriprt.

A REBOOT OF THE ESXi 4.1 Host Server is NOT REQUIRED.

1. VMX01 - Prevent virtual disk shrinking 0%

isolation.tools.diskWiper.disable=TRUE
isolation.tools.diskShrink.disable=TRUE

VMX02 - Prevent other users from spying on administrator remote consoles 0%

3. VMX10 - Ensure that unauthorized devices are not connected 0%

Delete devices, you do not want to be used, e.g. floppy drive, cdrom drive etc

4. VMX11 - Prevent unauthorized removal, connection and modification of devices

isolation.device.edit.disable=TRUE

5. VMX20 - Limit virtual machine log file size and number 0%

log.rotateSize=1000000
log.keepOld=10

5. VMX21 - Limit informational messages from the virtual machine to the VMX file

By default, all virtual machines on a VMware ESX/ESXi host share the resources
equally. By using the resource management capabilities of VMware ESX/ESXi, such
as shares and limits, you can control the server resources that a virtual machine
consumes.

Use shares or reservations to guarantee resources to critical virtual machines. Use
limits to constrain resource consumption by virtual machines that have a greater
risk of being exploited or attacked, or ones that run applications that are known to
have the potential to greatly consume resources.

the easiest way to apply the fix would be PowerCLI but you need to Power OFF the VM and Power ON for the configuration to take effect.

You can find the sample script

http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/06/automate-the-hardening-of-your-virtual-machine-vmx-configurations.html

If you are using PowerCLI 5.1 then you have the cmdlet which can be used
