iPad 3 won't wake up

Last nite I used my iPad 3, put it to sleep and went to bed.  This morning it wouldn't wake up.  Put it on the charger, but still didn't come on - no indication that it is charging on either of the Apple chargers I use.  Left it on one then the other for hours.  Also tested the chargers with other devices.  Have cycled the wake/sleep button, to no avail.  This unit has been treated well - no drops or liquids.  Kinda obvious to suspect the battery.  Is there a way to test it? Reset it? Other ideas?

You need to perform a HARD RESET on the iPad.  This is the equivalent of a shutdown and reboot on a PC.

To do a hard reset, just hold down the "Sleep/Wake" button on the upper right of your iPad along with the circular "Home" button on the lower middle part of the device's bezel and keep them both held down. After 10 seconds, you should see the Apple logo. You can now release the buttons.

If the apple logo does not appear when you do this ... you can try plugging it into the charger for a few hours.  If the power on the iPad runs out completely it can take an hour or more for it to regain enough charge to be able to boot and startup.

If the HARD RESET and recharging do not work then you will probably need to take it to a specialist to repair (if it is under an applecare warranty or less than 1 year old you're covered by Apple and should contact them to arrange a repair).

The Hard Reset didn't bring up any display, so I plugged it in, as suggested.  Immediately and briefly, the battery icon with a thin red bar comes up. At least now I know it's charging. I'm hoping I don't need to go to step 3.
