"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's a closely guarded Google secret.
There are 3 basic tasks, that allow search engines to produce information.

1.They search the Internet based on key words.
2.They keep an index of the key words they found and where they found them.
3.They allow users to find the site, they where looking for.

Sorry I couldn't help myself with that one...

But seriously:

Google navigates the web crawling links from page to page.  Those pages are sorted by content and other factors.  Google then keeps track of all of that information in an index.  When you type into Google's search engine, algorithms start looking for clues to better understand what you are potentially looking for.  Based on those clues, relevant content is pulled from the index mentioned earlier.  All of the matching content from the index is then ranked based on certain factors.

As more searches are completed, and content is selected, the ranking and algorithms are updated to aid in future searches.
