Error message: explorer.exe the server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect

My Windows 7 Prof machine started getting this message today when I try to open Explorer:

explorer.exe
the server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect

All apps that I use frequently such as MS Office 2010 (Outlook, Word, Excel),  Chrome, FireFox, Internet Explorer seem to work, it's just Windows Explorer that doesn't.

My taskbar changed colour (it's lighter than before) but my desktop is fine. I get an onscreen message from the system tray when I boot about a service not starting but did not write it down.

I took a look at the Event Viewer after a reboot, filtering to show only Critical & Errors. These are the results, with the log filters set to Filtered on Critical & Error

13:52:33 - Application Error
Windows cannot access the file C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Spooler SubSystem App because of this error.

Program: Spooler SubSystem App
File: C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
User Action
1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
      - It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
      - It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I should also have noted that:

It takes a very long time to boot now!
There is 11 GB free HDD space on the system drive (Temp & TMP relocated to a second HDD)

Thanks,

Another interesting observation: I used my laptop instead of my desktop for a while and let the desktop machine sit there at the Win 7 logon screen for quite some time ... and Windows Explorer works fine now! I still cannot open the Security Log though...

1. Backup your data.

2. Check your hdd. You have a lot of disk related errors (iastor).
a. It might be physically failing (which you will find out by running the manufacturer's diagnostic tool) or
b. you might have data corruption, which you can solve by running chkdsk, either from a Windows disk or by scheduling it by right clicking on your system partition (usually C:) and then going to Properties->Tools->Check Now and checking both options, then pressing "Start"

Thanks Dan. First off, all important data is on our server!

Re 2.a: I would have to speak to Dell about that, the machine is under until sometime in 2014.

So, unless someone else has a better idea, I guess I have to call Dell!

Thanks much,

You don't need Dell to check your hdd. They don't make hdd's, as far as I know.
You can use Speccy (http://www.piriform.com/speccy) to find out what brand is your hdd (along with a bunch of other info) and then go to the manufacturer's site and download the diagnostic software.

For ex, for Segate/Maxtor you would use Seatools: http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/ , and for Western Digital: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&sid=3&lang=en

That way, if your hdd is failing, you will know before you send your system to Dell and can specify the problem on you RMA card. That usually shortens the time they keep the system in service.

There *could* be other causes for the iastor errors, but less likely:
a. recently installed RAID/AHCI driver that's not 100% compatible (for ex from Windows Update).
b. a defective cable/connector from your HDD to your MB/RAID controller
c. power source failures - fluctuates the power available to your HDD.

Thanks for the ideas Dan. As it's under warranty, I'm going to call Dell and have them take a look at it...
