Why do I need a MS account to download some products?

I get this kind of stuff when I try to download skype and some other things http://screencast.com/t/A2FZaWH5cX7.  How can I avoid it?

I cannot see that the screen cast (not good quality) relates to having a Microsoft Account as in the subject of your question.

You need to use the Microsoft Store to download Metro Apps and you need a Microsoft account to do this. This is exactly the same as for Apple iPhone or iWhatever.

If you want Desktop Skype (I use this) go to Microsoft, Downloads, Download home and look for Skype then Desktop Skype. You should be able to download Desktop Skype without a Microsoft Account. But use Microsoft Downloads to get it (not a third party download).

Because, as every other company, Microsoft decides to sell some products for money, give out other products for free with no strings attached (usually various fixes and add-ons to the paid ones), and give out yet other products in exchange for your contact information that will allow Microsoft to advertise to you in hope that you will buy something from the first category, plus sell it to other companies so they try the same.

10minutemail.com may be handy.

okay okay. You only need a ms account if your are downloading apps from their store. Skype offers a desktop and and win 8 app version. They push you in the direction of the Win 8 app version if you are using win 8 OS. <---(bad kitty). I can only guess why but I don't think it's from an evil place...(someone may have thought it might be easier for people)     ;)
"some" products may easily include Metro apps and you must have a Microsoft account to do this as I noted above - just like Apple.

I get Desktop IE and Desktop Skype without an account, but for Metro and Lenovo apps, I need to log in - free or not.

There is a version of Skype which is integrated into the users email account, it has replaced Messenger.

In order to use Skype with your Messenger account, you have to supply your MS online mail account when you download. BUT, you should still be able to download Skype without using MS Mail creds here: Use one Skype account across all your devicesUser generated image
