Clarify for me the different in full vs copy so I'm not mistaken.  Using Symantec BUE 2010 with Exchange agent(for 2010 server 4 Db raw access storage off EQL SAN via iqn).  Full is updated when i do full backups of the Store/DAG via BUE.   Copy is gets updated when i do a backup of the volumes from the local server 2008 windows backup utility.

Question: Aren't both in essence full backups that can be restored from? Why is one reported as full and the other copy?

Thank you.

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Copy backup of Exchange Databases has all of the information that a Full backup has. The difference is that when a Full backup is completed the Transaction log files are truncated when the backup is completed.

Copies are used in scenarios where you are trying to reseed or seed a replica database. Copy's are not usually intended for Full Recovery purposes.

wow so using windows backup on the local exchange server to backup the db volumes(data and log drives) doesn't even truncate the logs and can't be used to restore your db in the event of a DR or say wanted to mount the dbs on a different/new server for redeployment or some other issue?

in exchange 2003 i recovered from the DS backups and system state using windows backups only... Was also able to restore ds in order to restore mailbox when i needed something once for a legal issue.

Thx

The Copy backups are intended to provide an Image of data for testing diagnosis and listed above seeding database copies.

You can recover using copies but it's main function is listed above.
