Help with SQL server 2008 r2 corrupted install

Hello Experts,

I have a bad sql server install. I mistakenly installed 1st time with default instance which i dont wont and then uninstalled it and later on try to install with named instance but it would error out in the middle of installation and i just close out and manually start sql server and it would start but not the agent. I even cannot connect to the database engine with the Virtual server name i mentioned. After researching thoroughly i realized both sql server and agent were missing the "VirtualServername" entry in the sql server properties -> Advanced -> Virtual Server Name from the configuration Manager. Now the question is can i manually enter my server name in there?

Did you perform a reboot after the install? Try performing a full un-installation ending with a reboot.

Then try the install again.

Yes i did that. But i can try again. Just to confirm, i am uninstalling throught the mainteance tab on installation launcher and selecting "remove node froma a sql server failover cluster". I hope that would remove all entries from the registry as well. But i have a feeling that its not deleting everything. Give me some time, i can try again and get back to you.
Might want to follow these steps and after removing node, might want to un-install MS SQL too via control panel add/remove.

I didnt reboot then but i followed these instructions and ran the uninstall again and it worked fine.

1.Open Registry Editor and navigate to one of the following locations and ensure that all the values are set to 1. If not, manually edit the respective values and set them to 1.

For a named Instance
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.INSTNAME\ConfigurationState

I rebooted server now and doing a fresh install. I will update you once i finish the install and if there are no more issues i can close this thread.

same situation as i called out in my original problem statement. The Virtualservername is blank if i click on the sql server properties -> advanced of config manager.

can we manually enter the value in the registry so that it would recognize the virtual name of the server and start?
Hmmm I think you still have remnant objects referencing the failed SQL install. I'd get rid of everything and have a clean install as otherwise you may face bigger problems later on when it is LIVE with data.

well  that was my question. How do i get rid of all the references of my bad install? I tried to remove everything by uninstalling with control panel and also with the sql install launcher.

I found an tool (nevo uninstaller) that removes all the registry key associated wiht the install. So i uninstalled sql server using this tool and since then i am facing this new error during setup. Does anyone know what this means?

Error: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done
