Transfer SQL database to different server

What are the steps to transfer an sql database from one server (SQLServer1) to another (SQQLServer2)? I have MS SQL 2008 on both servers. Are there extra steps if I have MS SQL Server 2012 on MSQLServer2?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Backup database on server1, restore database on server2. Make sure you don't allow anyone to update the database on server1.

Make sure the correct database users with permissions are setup on server2.

2008 will be happily restored to a 2012 server.

My only addition to dale's excellent comment is for server 2008 ensure both versions are the same or the new server is the later version.
