Sonicwall VPN Name Registration

I have users that are using the NetExtender to connect to a sonicwall firewall router, and I want their Netbios names to be resolvable somehow.  So they can be identified by their computer name as apposed to their ip address.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Sorry for a bare link but it's pretty self explanatory.

Hi halejr1,

When you say,
...So they can be identified by their computer name as apposed to their ip address
are you talking about resolving in the SonicWALL logs or in the SSL-VPN > Status page...or have I completely misinterpreted the question?

If I misinterpreted the question, help me understand what you're looking to do.

If logs, go to Log > Name Resolution, under Name Resolution Settings, next to Name Resolution Method: select DNS then NetBIOS then click OK.

If SSL-VPN status, go to SSL VPN > Client Settings and you will see there is no resolution which can be made. It has fixed columns for User Name, Client Virtual, IP Client WAN IP, etc.

If you are wanting to know how to configure DNS for SSL-VPN, see attachment below.SSL-VPN DNS Config

Thanks for all your input ... let me make a clarification of what I am trying to achieve...

so I have SSL VPN Setup...
your machine name is "JoeMama"
you connect to my SSL VPN
I want to ping your machine by typing "ping joemama"
I cannot do this -- why?
Is there a way to force this?

FWIW -- Here is what I have tried:
I have set the VPN to get DHCP from DHCP Server
I think I have it set to register with that dhcp server
I have also set the WINS server to resolve... (I don't know if my win's server is doing dynamic registrations with the SSLVPN clients)

I hope this helps.

Thanks

OK - regarding DHCP if you have a Windows Server performing this function then just make sure in the firewall under Network > DHCP Server that Enable DHCPv4 Server is unchecked.

RE: DNS - DNS for SSL-VPN should be setup as the image indicates here: http:#a39567521. Put the IP of the DHCP Server in DNS Server and Domain Server accordingly. You can also specify your WINS Server below that.

Make sense?
