Oracle - Package Question

So if a user has only select (read only) access and you give that user permission to a package that can manipulate data, does that user now have the ability to manipulate the data?

Or does the fact the user only has select access prevent the the inserts/updates/deletes from executing within the package?

I'm trying to get access for a user to a package, which has data manipulation functions, but only give read only access.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes.

Create a new package that calls only the read only parts of the other package.  Grant execute on that to the read only user.

I guess I should qualify that:  That is the default behavior.

You can set up the procedures with AUTHID and change the behavior.
