/var/spool/mail/root: permission denied

Here I go again, running linux 5.8, when trying to open mail for other users by su username, keep on getting a permission error. How do I fix the issue?

User should be in mail group:

ls -l /var/mail

Use groups to check this.

Are you using

su username

su - username

Notice dash after su
