vmware as test system

Hi Experts,

I have two servers and I want to use them for a test system.
Someone told me I can install ESXi and Vcenter for some days, right ?

I have ihnstalled ESXi, I thought ESXi is for free, but I have a message to enter a license after 60 days. Is it not for free ?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can install trial version of VMware vSphere vCenter Server and VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) for 60 days. (do not enter a license).

At 59/60 days, you need to obtain a FREE License, to Register it, and continue for free.

Please see my EE Articles, Step by Step Tutorial Instructions with Screenshots

Part 1: HOW TO: Install and Configure VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5.1 (ESXi 5.1)

Part 2: HOW TO: Connect to the VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5.1 (ESXi 5.1) using the vSphere Client

If you do not assign a FREE license, both will run in TRIAL MODE, and you can use ALL the Enterprise Plus Features.

There is NO FREE license available for vCenter Server only ESXi.

It is free but to use the free version you have to create an account and request a free license.  Keep in mind that you cannot add a free ESXi into vCenter.

Create a free account https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/evalcenter?p=free-esxi5&lp=default to get the Free ESXi license.

You can install vCenter for a trial period of 60 days  but you will not able to manage the Free ESXi with vCenter

ok when I also want to use the vcenter what can I do ?
Someone told me I can reinstall the vcenter each 90 days.

But what about the esxi ?
Are you sure a esxi with free license I cannot put to the vcenter ?
0
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
Correct, you CANNOT add ESXi (FREE) to vCenter Server.

Technically reinstalling vCenter Server every 60 days, is a breach of the License Agreement.

Why not spend $500 on VMware vSphere Essentials, and you'll get 3 Hosts Licenses for 2 processors, and vCenter Server - A Bargain!

Yes it cannot be added to the vCenter

If you are running more than one ESXi host and require vCenter for Management then I would suggest to purchase a license, Check out the features and license comparison

ok I see.
But you also told me when the 60 days are over, then it goes to trial mode.
But can I still use it later on ?

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
1 - 60 days is TRIAL MODE!

After 60 days is over you need to apply a License!

There are NO FREE LICENSES for vCenter Server. So this will EXPIRE.

FREE Licenses only available for ESXi. If you do not APPLY a FREE license, it will also EXPIRE.

IF YOU APPLY a LICENSE before 60 days, it goes into FREE MODE, and you will not be able to TEST ALL the Licensed functions.

about the license, when I have 2 quad core machines, then I have to pay more than 500 EUR for the Essentail License right ?
0
Paul SolovyovskySenior IT AdvisorCommented:
That's correct. If you want to run vCenter with ESXi hosts you'll need the Essentials bundle that gives up to 3 ESXi host licenses

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
VMware vSphere Essentials entitles you to 3 x 2 CPU Processor Licenses e.g. 6! That is the MAXIMUM!

You cannot add any other bundles.

You also get a license for vCenter Server.

Essentials is a basic product. You would need to switch to at least VMware vSphere Standard to license all your host processors and licenses correctly, which is far more expensive than $500 (approx!).

ok nice, so I pay once or monthly or yearly the 500 EUR for the essentails bundle ?
And HA and FT is included ?
0
Paul SolovyovskySenior IT AdvisorCommented:
It's a one time cost, HA and FT is not available, that is in Essentials Plus.  FT is almost useless as it's capped at 1 vCPU per VM and no snapshots allowed so you can't do any integrated vmware backups..

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
FT is only included with Enterprise Plus, these are one off costs, plus support yearly if required.

HA is included in Essentials Plus.

ok I see, no HA and FT.
But minimum HA should be available right ?
Do you know prices for the Essential Plus Kit ?
0
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
VMware HA is available in Essentials Plus.

approx $6000

that includes 1 Year Basic Support.

Technical Support, 12 Hours/Day, per published Business Hours, Monday through Friday.

Eprs_AdminSystem ArchitectAuthor Commented:
ok I see.
When the support is over, the license is still usable right ?
It is a one time fee right ?

Correct, Software is still usable, but no support.
