I am new to
i have developed one web application using c# (

i have one citymaster.aspx and citymaster table.
user used to add record from citymaster.aspx in citymaster table.
in citymaster table i have three fields : cityid, cityname, is_deletestatus

when user enter new city record like (1, "NewYork", 'N')
Note : 'N' means record is active not deleted.

If some one deletes record from citymaster.aspx page, then instead of deleteing record physically from citymaster table i just used to change the is_deletestatus field to 'Y' (means that record is deleted)

now i also have studentmaster table in which i have cityid field.

so if someone used to delete city from citymaster then i need to check whether that city is allocated to any student record. if allocated then i dont even want to mark it 'Y'. (just as cascading constratint)

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can add a query on delete action to get the count of students with city id. If the count is > 0 then there exists a student with the city.

You can add a code which does not let user to delete the record or simply gives alert to the user.
