HP P2000 Storageworks SAN

I have two ESXi 4.1 hosts connected to an HP P2000 SAN using Qlogic 8gb HBA's.  The SAN has three LUNS configured and we have multiple VM's on the different LUNS.

I have set up a new VMWare environment with two ESXi 5.5 Hosts.  I has installed QLogic 8GB HBA's and I would like to point it to the existing LUNS on the P2000 SAN.

We are using VCenter 5.5 and have added the two host.  I have added the local storage on each host as a local datastore.

When I scan the FC Adapter, it doesn't find any Storage on the SAN.

What am I missing to present the LUNS to the new hosts?

You will need to add the WWNN of the new HBAs in the new ESXi 5.5 host servers to the LUNs on the P2000...e.g. open a web browser, and open the Web GUI on the P2000

e.g. you need to complete LUN Mapping to WWNN HBA.

if you are also using Fabric (FC Switches), you may also need to alter your ZONES to allow these maps to complete.

Most likely you have missed the zoning part.  Check your fiber switch zones and make changes accordingly.

Okay I have added the WWNN ID to the SAN.  I checked the zoning on the fiber switch and all ports are in the default zone.

Now when I go to configuration for the host and click on storage adapter, it now show both LUN's on the SAN.

However, when I click on storage and try to add storage it doesn't find anything.

Here is a pic of the storage configuration paths.

You do not need to Add Storage, this should really be labelled "Add New Storage Without a VMFS Partition"

You mention you can detect the LUNs, and they are present, is this correct, so the first issue was WWNN Mapping?

You will probably have to login at the console, or via SSH remotely, to execute some additional commands.

So the WWNN mapping was certainly the problem.  Then when I  checked the zone on the switch, it looked like only one zone with all ports in that zone, but the GUI didn't show the port on the switch as actively connected.  Upon investigation, I realized that I had plugged the cable into an unlicensed port.  So I move an unused license to the port and it showed active immediately.

Then I went into colovshere and checked the FC storage adapter and it now shows

if you click Re-Scan and Refresh VMFS datastores, do the datastores appear, now that you have LUNs connected?

However, when I look at storage it only shows the local storage.  If I rescan for storage, it still only see the local storage.  If I try to add storage it comes up blank.

LUNs are definately present?

sfletcher1959VPAuthor Commented:
Not sure exactly what you mean.

These LUNS are currently holding active production VM's that are managed by our old 4.1 environment.  So the LUNS are definitely present on the SAN.  There are currently Three LUNS (two production and one backup).  When you look at the screen print FC Storage Second Pic (4 posts up), , it shows the 2 FC HBA's and three targets.

okay, so LUNs are currently detected by new ESXi servers.

can you login to console of server or remotely via SSH.

what output do you get with esxcfg-volume -l

you'll get output hopefully like:-

~ # esxcfg-volume -l
VMFS3 UUID/label: 4cc89503-f054d0d4-2865-00221958e471/nas3-vmfs
Can mount: Yes
Can resignature: No (the volume is being actively used)
Extent name: naa.600140588e9bab7d2b7ed4b53dadc1de:1     range: 0 - 1048319 (MB)

and then you can mount the datastore.

Not sure how to get to a command line.  Never do anything with a command line.  I have iLO installed and get to the ESXi splash scree.  From here I have the option to F2 or F12.  Neither get me to a command line.

you will need to access the Shell.

I think we are going to start to have a look at the server logs.

P2000 devicesI have the exact same problem with P2000 G3 SAS and ESXi 5.5.

I had one host running ESXi 5.1u1 with one local datastore and one datastore on the P2000.

I reinstalled the host with ESXI 5.5 (HP bundle), rebooted, only the local datastore showed up.

When clicking "Add storage", the P2000 disk showed up as new, uninitialized disk and the only option was to format disk.

I could see both disks under devices tab though.

I reinstalled 5.1u1 and both datastores showed up again.
