Hp Pavilion DV7-4177nr does not turn on when CD-ROM is connected

help..

i just received my laptop back and the north bridge chipset was replaced due to a flickering screen.

However, before I gave the laptop to the shop, I was having an issue:

When I pressed the power button, it only blinks once and then nothing happens.

After lots of trial and error, I find that the the ROM DRIVE / CD DRIVE is the culprit.

When i remove the cd rom drive, the laptop works fine. As a matter of fact im typing from it now.

The moment the sata interface touches the mobo's sata interface, the laptop shuts down...

if the laptop is powered off, it simply doesnt turn on - only one blink from the power button. If its turned on, the laptop shuts down abruptly.

at first i thought there may be a connector or cable. I check and moved around, pressed down, and agitated cables and the notebook remains on.

What is going on with my CD-ROM drive?

thanks much

One of a few things ... all bad.
1. Dead CD
2. Power supply can not handle the load (bad power supply, or CD broken)
3. Problem with the SATA port.

If this was my machine, I'd get an external enclosure with SATA port on the inside that talks via USB.  This enclosure will have it's own power.

So if CD works inside the enclosure, you know it is a power issue.  If it does not, you know the CD is bad.

If it is a power issue, the enclosure still lets you use the CD, and it isn't likely that you need the CD all that often anyway, so a $20 enclosure probably isn't such a bad thing after all.

thanks for the quick reply..

1. a dead CDROM drive will prevent the entire notebook from powering on ?

2. external power supplyl / ac adapter seems fine

3. the sata port...well what could have happened since I received this customers laptop? A port went bad all of a sudden? I took the laptop apart once and when i put it back this started happening - one blink when I push the power button to turn on laptop, then when i remove cd rom

attached is a pic of my cd rom.

Hi,

if you can try clean the CD Rom.small voltage fl-actuation from  external devices, mother board will respond to protect another device and it self will shunt down .if it is responding same connect anew CD Rom.

hmm..i can try spraying electrical contact cleaner on the cdrom connector.

I now understand that the machine will shutdown automatically if the motherboard i connect cdrom..

..but why would it not turn on period if the cd rom is bad?

again, i only dismantled the laptop once..not sure what to tell my customer about this one :\

thx

A short could cause this easily enough.

was this happening also BEFORE the repair ?  then i would return it
if not, it most likely is a bad cd drive
the only way is testing with another one  -if you have another laptop around, it can be necessary to remove the front plastic cover

DavidPresidentCommented:
An easy way to test a short is to measure the resistance between power and ground and compare the measurement with a known good CD.

Many thanks again for the help.

I will try to find a different cd rom to test. unfortunately i have no sata rom drives laying around..

i understand a short could have caused this. Ouch..my client did not give me the laptop in those conditions. I turned it on a few times with the cd drive and this did not happen.

After I changed the bottom case of the laptop - the chassis - I put everything back together and i have this "power button light blinks once and notebook remains off" issue :\

seems you made a mistake somewher  -disassemble, and double check your work

that is what i was thinking..i made sure all was connected properly.

Not sure if i missed a connector somewhere..I've dismantled the laptop at least 5 times and double checked all connectors and cabling :\

I am sooo confused as to why is it that a bad cd would prevent the system from starting. I even disabled the cdrom in the boot order within BIOS..even if i did miss a connection, i don think a cd rom should prevent this from starting..

i would think if the cdrom is damaged. the computer would turn on..but the drive simply would not work - not prevent the system from starting.

my exact procedures to replicate the problem:

step1 - notebook powered off with cdom drive, battery inserted

Step 2 - attempt to start - NO GO - A blink on the power button then no more.

Step 3 - remove battery, remove cd rom, re-connect cdrom -

Step4 - Power on laptop - All works ok - now that the cd is out.

Step 5- Power off laptop, remove battery, connect cd drive.

Step 6- Power on laptop -NO GO- One blink and laptop remains off. no more blinks from led in power button even if i continue to press it several time.

i now have a cd drive from a USFF computer that will fit my Hp notebook.

I will test in about 30 minutes.

If this is not the issue. i have no clue what would be.

And if this is the problem, I have no idea what to tell my client - the blu ray drive suddenly failed during my possession..uhh..not sure.

Hi ,
can you check the battery also it must be the first you need to check if it is fully discharge  and not charging?

All hardware eventually fails in this universe. The bad part about that is if it dies in the hands of somebody who fixes them.

If that is the case, the the best thing to do is spend the $25 or so for a used replacement on ebay and eat the cost.  Tell your customer you replaced it and move on.  I would think your time is worth more than $25.

>>  why is it that a bad cd would prevent the system from starting  <<   the cd  - and many other devices, like disks, share the same signals  and power lines
when one is stuck low or high - it can block everything; it does not have to be the power lines (eg think about a reset line)
so -replace it, or test it on another system

at last..i used a different cd and the issue continued.

I ended up connecting the CDROM sata cable to a different port on the mobo. Powered up like a charm!

I can't believe i didnt try this before

i dont understand  - i thought it was a laptop : "i just received my laptop back "
how did you connect it to another port??
0
tobe1424Author Commented:
Correct.

I believe there is 3 sata ports on the mobo. One for hdd, one for cd and one is vacant. From the laptop's SATA port ( where i plug the cd drive) there is a cable that connects that sata port to the bus. The SATA port is not embedded to the mobo.
