Is Oracle Database 11g a multi-node cluster or a single node database or it could be both?

Very novice question.  Thanks.

It could be either/or but not both.

Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) is the multimode cluster name.

A high-level explaination:

An Oracle Instance is considered the server processes and memory structures.
An Oracle Database is considered the files on disk.

An instance belongs to one and only one database.
A database can be shared by multiple instances (RAC or the older Multi-Threaded Server).
