how to check exchange cals and connected users in exchange 2007

Hi Experts,

we are using exchange 2007 and I have to check all cals.
Is there a way to check installed cals on the server ?
And how many users are connected ?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The CALs on Exchange are not actively enforced and there isn't a count of the used CALs anywhere. You can purchase 10 CALs and use 50 without technical issue, however that would be illegal. To find out you need to count up your active (i.e. will be or are currently accessed) mailboxes, including ones used by system/service accounts.

Microsoft are also available to talk to about Software Asset Management for your whole estate and will help you find out what you need, then let you know how to pay any difference.

Does this include also the OWA webmail accounts ?
Yes, this includes users of OWA and ActiveSync, however if one user has mailbox and accesses it with OWA, mobile, IMAP, POP3, Outlook then that is just one CAL.

Alternatively, if you have lots of users sharing desktops then you could use device CALs.
